Early Life
On September 2, 1964, Reeves was born in Beirut, Lebanon. He was the son of fashion designer and actress Patricia (née Taylor) and Samuel Nowlin Reeves Jr. When Reeves was three years old his father left his wife and family. When Reeves was thirteen, he last saw his father on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.
His mother relocated the family to Sydney after her and his father’s 1966 divorce, and in 1970 she wed Paul Aaron, a director for Broadway and Hollywood, in New York City. After relocating to Toronto, the couple filed for divorce in 1971.
Reeves and Aaron stayed in touch, with Aaron giving advise and introducing him to a position at the Hedgerow Theatre in Pennsylvania. In 1976, Reeves’s mother wed rock music promoter Robert Miller; the two parted ways in 1980.
At the age of 15, Reeves gave up his dream of playing for the Canadian Olympic team to pursue a career in acting. He was able to continue his schooling while working as an actor by attending Avondale Secondary Alternative School after graduating from De La Salle College. At the age of 17, Reeves left his high school education.

Reeves worked as a correspondent for the youth television series Going Great on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in 1984. He made his acting debut in a Hangin’ In television series episode the same year. He performed in a theatre version of Romeo and Juliet in 1985 at the Leah Posluns Theatre in North York, Ontario, as Mercutio.

Reeves began dating Jennifer Syme, the assistant of director David Lynch, at a 1998 birthday celebration for his band Dogstar. Eight months into her pregnancy, Syme gave birth to the couple’s stillborn child on December 24, 1999. A few weeks later, the pair broke up, but they subsequently got back together. Syme died on April 2, 2001, in Los Angeles, when her automobile struck three parked cars on Cahuenga Boulevard.
