A grader dubbed King Bob employs several enforcers to ensure that his rulings are followed out.

The society’s stringent beliefs and social standards demand strict adherence from all pupils.

In most episodes, one or more of the six major individuals strive to strike a balance between their individualism and societal order. Individuals frequently protect their independence against perceived dangers from parents, school administration, or societal standards. T.J. Detweiler, the group’s leader, has a comprehensive understanding of the battle. However, he occasionally takes the group too far toward conformity or non-conformity and needs to be redirected by his buddies to balance things out.

The show’s characters make several references to the complex political realities of the Cold War. In Episode 85, Here Comes Mr. Perfect, Randall considers blackmailing a student for being a suspected Communist, whereas in Episode 37, The Substitute, Mr. E asks a student to write an essay on why bullying is unethical, unless it serves the geopolitical goals of the US. In Episode 101, “The Secret Life of Grotke,” the Recess gang suspects Miss Grotke of being an anti-American spy, highlighting Cold War themes.
